One World, Gravel Riding, and Lodging

The word is starting to get out to the Major Taylor Clubs about the MTMS in Asheville this April, with more than a few of you signing up to follow this site. If you haven’t done so there is a signup form on the bottom of each page on the website.   Also, a number of you have told us you have already booked your hotel room.

First up: LODGING.  We encourage you to make your decisions about lodging quickly and get your reservation.   Visit the lodging page on the website to see all of your options. The MTMS headquarters is at the Downtown Ashville Inn, which can’t be beat for location or price – although its basic accomodations.  But it will fill up, and we don’t want you left out.  You can check out all of the Asheville Lodging options on the site – if you prefer something a little cheaper or a lot nicer than the DTAI.  Please note that it’s possible that the DTAI may lower their prices a little in the next few weeks/months. They are still under the impression that that the MTMS will be sharing a weekend with the very popular MOOG Fest – but the festival has been postponed a year. Once they figure it out they may drop the price. We will try to let you know if that happens, but in the meantime you can always reserve your room now and rebook it at the lower price later. Remember to tell DTAI if you have an AAA, AARP, military or government discount.

RIDING. We have posted some preliminary routes on the RIDES section of the site – check them out. A new development is that the Burnsville Metric will overlap the MTMS on Saturday.   Years ago the MACC, Detroit, and Columbus crews would do the Burnsville and ride it competitively against the local clubs. That may happen again this year, and maybe we can get the best riders from each club to put in a good Major Taylor showing. We have also added some “Less Hilly” rides to the week, but haven’t posted them on the site yet. Finally, we have received a couple of requests to provide a day or two of gravel ride options. The Pisgah Forest, just south of Asheville is laced with more than 400 miles of logging roads, old double-track and fire roads – perfect for a cyclocross or gravel bike. More on that early next year.

BEER. Asheville is a serious beer town. In the last few months New Belgium Brewing has broken ground on their new brewery in the Arts District – won’t be open for the 2015 MTMS, but maybe the next year. Also, a new micro-brewery has opened in downtown: One World Brewing. Like most of the beer places in Asheville, it’s only a short walk from the DTAI. It’s a great speakeasy type space below Salsa Caribbean Burritos, one of the best restaurants in Asheville.

Keep an eye on the website – we’ll be adding more through the Fall and Winter. And share this with your clubmates who may not have focused in on the MTMS yet. April is only 6 months away!
